Goodbye November blues

Writer: Antoine TurmelAntoine Turmel

After a magnificent autumn filled with vibrant colours and fresh crisp air… November arrives.

With it, seasonal depression lurks, and motivation to stay active decreases. Fortunately, there’s a simple and effective solution to chase away the November blues: HIIT, or High Intensity Interval Training.

HIIT alternates between periods of intense effort and short recovery. While it requires less time than continuous endurance training, it offers just as many benefits, if not more, for cardiovascular and mental health, and can be practised literally anywhere.

Now, why is HIIT so effective against seasonal depression?

Endorphin release: HIIT stimulates production of endorphins, those hormones that provide a feeling of well-being and pleasure, reducing stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Increases serotonin and dopamine: These neurotransmitters play a crucial role in regulating mood, sleep and motivation. HIIT promotes their production, contributing to better emotional balance.

Improved sleep quality: Intense physical activity helps regulate the circadian cycle and improve sleep quality, an essential factor in fighting fatigue and depression.

Anti-inflammatory effects: Studies show that HIIT can reduce chronic inflammation, which is often associated with depression and other mood disorders.

Stimulation of neurogenesis: HIIT promotes the creation of new neurons in the hippocampus, a region of the brain involved in memory and learning which is affected by depression.

Mont-Tremblant is full of opportunities to be physically active and integrate HIIT into your routine. Interval trail running is a good example. Start with a 1:2 work-to-rest ratio: one minute of running at about 80 per cent of your maximum effort, followed by two minutes of walking. Gradually progress to a ratio closer to 1:1 or increase the intensity from 80 per cent to 85 per cent.

HIIT is an effective remedy against the November blues. In addition to being fast and efficient, it is accessible everywhere and to everyone.

Why wait for New Year’s resolutions? Let’s HIIT November!
